American Veteran Freed from Russian Prison

An American military veteran, Robert Gilman, has been released from a Russian prison after spending over four years under harsh conditions. Gilman had been gravely ill, but he is now on his way to a U.S. military hospital in Texas for medical and psychological assessment. His family, including his mother who was in Russia attempting to visit him, has traveled to Texas to accompany him. Eric Lebson from Global Reach, an advocacy group, confirmed Gilman’s release.

President Donald Trump announced Gilman’s release on social media, noting that he would be arriving at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Trump mentioned speaking with Gilman over the phone and said he requested a cheeseburger upon arrival. Trump also communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the release, which was described as a humanitarian gesture. Trump emphasized that no prisoner exchange took place in securing Gilman’s release.

Gilman, a 32-year-old former teacher and Marine, had his sentence extended multiple times. Initially sentenced to three and a half years in 2022 for striking a police officer, additional convictions for assaulting prison staff lengthened his time in prison to ten years. His father disputes the charges, and Gilman’s sister, Lexie Hudson, praised President Trump and Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts for their efforts in his release.

Hudson criticized the Russian authorities for their treatment of her brother, attributing it to his American nationality and military background. The Federal Penitentiary Service in Russia had not responded to queries about Gilman’s deteriorating health.

Arrests of Americans in Russia have become more frequent, raising concerns that Russians may use American detainees as leverage in negotiations involving Russian nationals held in the U.S. and Europe. The State Department confirmed that Gilman, previously deemed wrongfully detained, was released on humanitarian grounds without any exchanges or concessions.

During a trial in Voronezh, media reported Gilman admitted to the charges and apologized to the guards involved. It was said he wanted to avoid transfer to another facility. Gilman had been in a civilian hospital since July due to a psychiatric condition. His situation worsened to the point of needing a feeding tube, described as life-threatening by Lebson.

Senator Markey held Russia responsible for Gilman’s declining health and called Gilman’s return long overdue. He detailed Gilman’s exposure to physical torture and forced medication, which contributed to his current state. Markey had urged for collaboration between Russia and the U.S. for Gilman’s release, amid concerns about Americans detained in Russia.
