Georgia’s Gubernatorial Race: A Close Contest Between Bottoms and Jackson

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms and Republican Rick Jackson are closely contested in the race for Georgia governor. A recent poll shows Bottoms slightly ahead, but the lead is within the margin of error. Democrats aim to reclaim the governor’s mansion after over 20 years of Republican control.

With Governor Brian Kemp unable to run due to term limits, Democrats see a unique opportunity. A win for Bottoms would mark the first Democratic victory in a Georgia governor’s race since Roy Barnes in 1998. However, achieving this victory requires strong Democratic turnout and crossover support from independents and moderate Republicans, a challenge in previous gubernatorial races.

The 2026 gubernatorial race in Georgia is part of 36 such contests across the U.S., featuring other important open-seat battles in states like Michigan, Alaska, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nevada. Bottoms secured the Democratic primary win in May with over 56 percent of the vote. Jackson, a billionaire healthcare executive, won the Republican nomination by defeating Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in a runoff, securing about 53 percent of the vote, after receiving an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

Georgia has increasingly become a battleground state in recent years. While Republicans still hold the governor’s office, Democrats have made inroads in federal races. Notably, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock’s Senate victories demonstrated this trend, despite Kemp’s comfortable re-election in 2022.

The Quantus Insights survey revealed Bottoms had 46.4 percent to Jackson’s 44.9 percent, with a 3.6 percentage point margin of error, surveying 815 likely voters, emphasizing the high priority voters place on affordable state bills. Another poll by the AARP, conducted by Fabrizio Ward and Impact Research, found Bottoms with 48 percent and Jackson with 46 percent, with a 3 percentage point margin of error.

Previous polls indicated a larger lead for Bottoms. A State Navigate survey found Bottoms leading Jackson in both regular and leaner-included scenarios. The Beacon Research and Shaw & Company Research survey, sponsored by Fox News, showed Bottoms with a 52 percent to 47 percent advantage over Jackson.

One Wick Research poll had Jackson slightly ahead, but within a 2.9 percentage point margin of error. Bottoms enjoyed an 8.6-point familiarity advantage over Jackson. Prediction markets currently favor Bottoms, with odds from Kalshi and Polymarket showing a lead.

The political landscape in Georgia has shifted. Rapid growth and demographic changes in Atlanta’s suburbs transformed Georgia into a swing state. Atlanta suburbs leaned more Democratic from 2020 to 2024, despite nationwide shifts rightward. Democrats hope these trends will continue in 2026 to boost their chances in Georgia.

Trump claimed Georgia by about 2.2 percentage points in the 2024 election, following Joe Biden’s narrow win in 2020. Republican candidates held strong previous wins, with Mitt Romney and John McCain winning by wider margins in prior years.

This year, Georgia’s Senate race also draws significant attention. Democrat Jon Ossoff seeks re-election, reporting considerable financial backing compared to Republican challenger Mike Collins. The University of Virginia’s Center for Politics recently shifted the Senate race rating to “likely Democratic.”
