In the eighth inning, Freeman positioned himself under a pop fly but lost his bearings in foul territory. As he attempted to catch the ball, he fell down the steps of the Royals’ dugout.

This incident happened during the game at Dodger Stadium on August 12, 2026. Immediately after the fall, teammates, Royals players, and trainers hurried over to check on him. Freeman received a standing ovation as he climbed back onto the field but left the game for safety as the Dodgers secured a 4-2 victory.

Freeman later addressed the media, stating, “I didn’t hit my head, so that was the key part there.” He mentioned soreness in his knees, shoulder, hand, and wrist but remained in high spirits following the fall. He explained that he lost track of the dugout railing while trying to catch Isaac Collins’ pop-up.

Manager Dave Roberts commented on the incident, saying, “I think that we really dodged a bullet. Very scary visually. For right now, he’s in good spirits, which I think is a good sign.
