The mother of a congressional intern killed in 2025 acknowledges the effectiveness of President Donald Trump’s efforts to reduce crime in Washington, D.C. The Major Cities Chiefs Association reports a significant drop in homicides, with a 43.9% decrease in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. In 2025, there were 82 homicides, but that number fell to 46 in the following year.
Trump’s intervention involved deploying the National Guard and assuming control of the local police force in August 2025 to combat crime and disorder in the nation’s capital.

During an event at the U.S. Park Police Anacostia Operations Facility in August 2025, Trump emphasized the federal government’s role in reducing crime. The National Guard’s deployment placed the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal oversight, aiding in crime prevention.
Fox News Digital interviewed Tamara Jachym, mother of the late Tarpinian-Jachym, who expressed optimism about the changes. She noted that the increased presence of the National Guard brings a sense of safety to the area.
Jachym shared, “Something’s working, and I think extra eyes and ears on the ground are helping this happen.” Her interactions with locals revealed their perception of increased security.
She recalled the rampant violence before the National Guard’s arrival, emphasizing the need for compassion from lawmakers opposing similar efforts in other cities.
“Your constituents are being murdered, maimed, and live in fear. It’s not OK,” she said.
White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis highlighted President Trump’s commitment to enhancing safety across America. The President’s Safe and Beautiful Task Force has made over 16,000 arrests, including serious offenders like murderers and drug traffickers. Bis remarked on the transformation of Washington, D.C., led by Trump’s initiatives.
Similar declines in homicide rates were reported in Memphis, Tennessee, where Trump also deployed the National Guard in 2025. The city’s homicides dropped by 43.7%, from 119 to 67, during the comparable timeframe.
Reflecting on her son’s legacy, Jachym described him as a “kind, humble soul” committed to finding solutions through collaboration.
