Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham responded to a viral pre-game rant by their head coach after the Indiana Fever’s 106-92 victory against the New York Liberty. The controversy began when Fever coach Stephanie White used her pre-game media availability to defend herself against criticism over a previous incident involving Chicago Sky’s DiJonai Carrington.

White had initially stated that she didn’t believe Carrington’s hit on Cunningham during a Saturday game was intentional. However, she later revised her stance after reviewing footage, calling the hit “egregious.” Despite the media scrutiny, Cunningham supported White, stating that the team’s locker room unity remained strong.

“There’s just been a lot of outside noise,” Cunningham said. “But our locker room is good.”

Cunningham defended White’s initial comments, explaining that White did not have access to a full view of the play when she first commented. White has a history with Carrington, having coached her at the Connecticut Sun for two seasons. Cunningham viewed White’s comments as an acknowledgment of Carrington’s talent, not a betrayal.

“Our world is just like, we love to hate. We love to divide,” Clark said. “Nobody wants to see each other succeed.”
