Fans React to New York Islanders Third Jersey Design Contest

3 hours ago 0

In July, the New York Islanders announced a contest allowing fans to design the team’s next third jersey. The idea was to give fans the chance to shape the jersey’s appearance, perhaps reducing criticism since they would be responsible for the new design.

However, the reception has been less than enthusiastic. Social media users have expressed disappointment with the eight finalists unveiled by the team. None of the options are deemed offensive but are seen as underwhelming.

Among the finalists is a design featuring a navy color scheme with the “ISLANDERS” wordmark and a chest stripe, a nod to traditional jersey styles. The Islanders’ history with third jerseys is not remarkable, with previous versions not leaving a lasting impression.

The design tool provided by the team was well-received, allowing many, including the author, to submit their own ideas.

Unfortunately, the selected designs seem conservative, and one closely resembles the Edmonton Oilers’ old orange jerseys. Many NHL fans who submitted designs, which were ultimately not chosen, have voiced their dissatisfaction online.

The selected jersey will be used in the upcoming season. Despite the lukewarm reception, the winning designer will receive a “VIP gameday experience.” With the Islanders’ current home and away jerseys receiving praise, some question the need for a third jersey.
