Bronx Man Arrested for Hate Crimes at Manhattan Synagogue

A Bronx man faces hate crime charges following an incident during Shabbat services at the Central Synagogue in Manhattan. Larry Montes, 46, allegedly disrupted the service, attacking a congregant and a security staff member. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided details on the arrest.

New York City hosts the largest urban Jewish community globally, outside of Israel. Antisemitism remains a significant issue, accounting for 57% of recorded hate crimes in the city last year, with 330 incidents reported.

The Incident

The altercation began around 6:10 p.m. on Friday. Security personnel tried to remove Montes from the synagogue, whereupon he allegedly assaulted a congregant, inflicted property damage, and attacked a security member. Tisch described him spitting at and headbutting the security guard. An NYPD sergeant on duty detained Montes swiftly. Police confirmed no additional threats and increased their presence in the area.

An NYPD spokesperson reported a 63-year-old woman suffered a minor lip cut and forearm injuries. Montes, from the Grand Concourse neighborhood, faces several charges, including assault and criminal mischief as hate crimes.

Central Synagogue expressed gratitude towards those who showed support following the event, acknowledging efforts by their security team and the NYPD.

Witness Accounts and Aftermath

Witnesses recounted chaos inside the synagogue. Footage revealed congregants in disarray as a security guard subdued Montes. Susan Roane, a congregant, described hearing a loud noise akin to gunfire, causing panic. Arlynn Greenbaum reported Montes was “ranting and full of hate.” Services resumed once order was restored.

Officials Condemn the Attack

Commissioner Tisch conveyed relief over the absence of major injuries. Participants at the scene have recovered. Tisch, who attended Central Synagogue in her youth, stressed that worship spaces should remain safe. Governor Kathy Hochul denounced the attack as “appalling,” affirming Jewish New Yorkers’ right to worship safely. She praised the swift arrest of the suspect.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the incident, advocating for safe religious observations in the city. He emphasized the city administration’s commitment to safeguarding Jewish New Yorkers.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer highlighted the increasing threat of antisemitism. He urged unity to eliminate antisemitic beliefs and acts, advocating for worship without fear.
