Fans Honor Bonnie Tyler in Welsh Village Farewell

Hundreds of admirers gathered in a coastal Welsh village to pay their respects to the late singer Bonnie Tyler as her coffin returned home. Known globally for her 1983 hit power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Tyler passed away last month at 75 in a hospital in Portugal.

Tyler had been hospitalized in May in Faro, where she had a residence, for emergency intestinal surgery. On the day of the farewell, many followers stood outside her former home, leaving floral tributes in remembrance.

Locals, along with fans from across the UK and beyond, lined the streets of Mumbles near Swansea to witness the hearse carrying her coffin, adorned with a Welsh flag. Numerous people waited by her old home, paying their respects.

Carys Edwards, 18, shared, “She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales. Her songs really touched many of us here; we loved her very much.”

Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, came from humble beginnings. As the daughter of a coal miner, she grew up in public housing in Skewen, Wales, approximately 7 miles from Swansea. She had three sisters and two brothers.

The singer received three Grammy nominations and represented Britain in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, securing the 19th position. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II honored her as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music, highlighted by her song “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” The ballad reached the top of the charts in both the UK and the US, amassing over a billion streams, often coinciding with actual solar eclipses in 2017, 2024, and during the recent eclipse.

Besides “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” she was celebrated for hits like “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” featured in the movie “Footloose.”

A private service celebrating Tyler’s life for family and friends is scheduled at a church in Swansea. Afterward, her final journey will lead through her hometown of Skewen.
