Devon Witherspoon’s Record-breaking Contract with the Seahawks

60 minutes ago 0

Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks has set a new benchmark in the NFL. He has signed a four-year contract worth $132 million, with over $101 million guaranteed. This makes him the highest-paid cornerback in the league both currently and historically.

On an annual average basis, Witherspoon’s contract will pay him $33 million per season. This surpasses the $31 million per season Denzel Ward received from the Cleveland Browns. Witherspoon’s earnings are also more than those of high-profile quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers, who makes $22 million annually with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Kirk Cousins, who earns $11.3 million with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The impressive deal includes more guaranteed money than Baker Mayfield’s $50 million in total guarantees, with Witherspoon securing $101 million. His annual average puts him in the same financial league as quarterback Sam Darnold of the Seahawks, whose contract averages $33.5 million per season with $55 million in guarantees.

These lucrative contracts highlight the robust business environment of the NFL. Despite not eclipsing the $33.3 million annually that Mayfield receives, Witherspoon’s unprecedented guarantees signify his value in the league.

The New England Patriots are also in the midst of negotiating a new contract for cornerback Christian Gonzalez. The team’s owner, Robert Kraft, has indicated a willingness to make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback, setting the stage for an exciting contract development. However, Witherspoon has set the bar high by reaching his agreement first.

Such negotiations are integral to the NFL’s culture, where top players strive for contracts that reflect their elite status. This cycle of leading contracts ensures that the league remains competitive in securing top talent.
