A Florida man on probation has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly stalking, murdering, and dismembering his 71-year-old stepfather. This arrest followed the discovery of grisly remains in three suitcases found near the victim’s home on August 4th.
Discovery of Remains
The gruesome find occurred just before midnight along a roadway in Orlando, close to the residence of the suspect’s mother and stepfather. Authorities identified the body parts as belonging to Jorge Vazquez-Escutia, the 71-year-old victim.
Timeline of Events
Hours before the discovery, Vazquez-Escutia’s family reported finding his phone, wallet, and keys at home, along with possible bloodstains on an outdoor fence. Despite his cars being in the driveway with unlocked doors, which was unusual, the family had not seen him in three days.
Friends of the accused, Jose Proano, informed the family that he claimed to have killed his stepfather. Concerned for Vazquez-Escutia’s well-being due to his memory loss, the sheriff’s office sought public assistance through social media.
Security footage from a neighbor’s camera showed a man in a black shirt jumping the back wall of the victim’s home on August 2nd. Later, the footage captured a man handling suitcases and placing a presumed human arm into one of them.
Investigation and Arrest
Investigators connected the suspect to the scene through phone records and reviewed a timeline of his movements. Proano previously traveled from Northport, 150 miles away. His ex-wife reported Proano acting erratically and making threats.
Proano met with investigators, confessing to a negative relationship with his stepfather. He blamed familial issues on Vazquez-Escutia, mentioning his schizophrenia and the unsettling thoughts it caused.
Deputies confirmed that Proano frequently contacted emergency services, worried about his mother’s safety. Their checks consistently found no issues.
The disturbing discovery of Vazquez-Escutia’s remains included finding the suitcases with a distinct odor and luggage tags identifying Proano’s mother.
Legal Proceedings
Proano initially denied involvement but later acknowledged the presence of his cellphone at the crime scene. Investigators noted defensive injuries on Proano, including scratches on various parts of his body.
His past criminal record includes charges from an armed burglary in 2022. A plea deal reduced his potential 20-year sentence, and he was on probation until 2027. His latest charges led to a probation violation and the reopening of his prior case.
The accused is currently held without bond in Orange County. His public defender refused to comment, citing client confidentiality.
