Weekend Box Office Results: Dinosaur Movies Compete with Blockbusters

52 minutes ago 0

This weekend saw two distinct dinosaur-themed films sharing the spotlight at the North American box office. Despite neither film dethroning ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ nor overtaking ‘The Odyssey’ for second place, they still managed to capture attention. ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie’ targeted young children, while ‘The End of Oak Street’ catered to an audience looking for PG-13 action. The Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor-led movie edged out the animated film with a projected $21 million against $20.5 million for the pups.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues its successful run three weekends in. Sony Pictures reports that the film added another $70 million domestically, raising its total to an impressive $785.8 million. It ranks as the fourth-largest domestic release ever. Globally, the film has surpassed $2 billion, becoming only the eighth film to do so without inflation adjustments, and the second-fastest to reach this milestone. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ achieved it in 11 days in 2019, whereas ‘Brand New Day’ took about 18 days.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ remained in second place after its fifth weekend. It brought in $23.2 million, pushing its domestic total over $504.7 million. International earnings, fueled by $36.6 million from its debut in China, have lifted its global total past $1.2 billion.

‘The End of Oak Street’ exceeded expectations at 3,446 locations, bringing in approximately $21 million domestically. Overseas, it garnered $26 million, culminating in a $47 million global opening against an $80 million production budget. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, this film features McGregor and Hathaway as 1982 suburban parents whose neighborhood is suddenly transported to prehistoric times. Though critics are favorable, with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences are less enthusiastic, reflected in a B CinemaScore. PostTrak polls show just over half the opening weekend audiences would recommend it.

The family-friendly ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,’ put out by Paramount Pictures, attracted viewers to 3,545 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. With a PG rating, it’s the third Paw Patrol film released since 2021. Audiences gave it an A CinemaScore. Its global running total stands at $69 million.

Rounding out the top five, the documentary ‘Katseye: Wild Hearts’ secured $4 million across 724 screens. Other newcomers made it into the top 10: ‘Six: The Musical Live’ garnered $3 million, followed by ‘The Brink of War’ at $2.7 million. The Tamil-language romance ‘Vishwanath & Sons’ earned $1.6 million, placing tenth.

Outside the top ten, Matthew McConaughey’s thriller ‘The Rivals of Amziah King’ earned over $1 million across 632 theaters. ‘Tony,’ the Anthony Bourdain biopic, made $706,676 from 37 theaters in its second weekend, with plans for expansion by A24.

The summer box office season was robust, netting over $4.2 billion in sales, approximately 5.7% higher than the pre-pandemic summer of 2019. Paul Dergarabedian, from Rentrak, notes this figure falls just $130 million short of the record set in summer 2013, led by ‘Iron Man 3’ and ‘Despicable Me 2.’ Though the summer might remain behind 2013, Dergarabedian predicts it will rank among the top five.

The year-to-date box office has reached just under $6.9 billion.
