Star quarterback Baker Mayfield expressed admiration for his teammate’s skills during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ training sessions. The offseason addition of running back Kenneth Gainwell, who signed a one-year, $14 million contract, is proving beneficial according to Mayfield’s observations.
During a recent training camp, Mayfield commented on Gainwell’s versatility. “He’s much more than a gadget guy. I’ve been completely overwhelmed with how talented he is. I realized during the camp that he was initially a receiver entering college,” Mayfield stated. “His running game is impressive, staying true to tracks and reading blocks effectively.”
Mayfield also highlighted Gainwell’s positive influence in the locker room, valuing him as a “veteran presence” who “leads by example.”

Previously, Gainwell was a key player for the Philadelphia Eagles, contributing to their Super Bowl LIX victory. Last year, he moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers, participating in 17 games and achieving 537 rushing yards with five touchdowns, although mainly serving as RB2 after Jaylen Warren.
Gainwell’s receiving skills add a valuable dimension to the team. While at the Steelers, he matched tight end Pat Freiermuth for the second-most receiving yards with 486 and made three touchdowns. Fans can anticipate his collaboration with Mayfield in the coming season.
In Tampa Bay, Gainwell will back up starting running back Bucky Irving, who missed several games last season due to injuries. The team aims to improve after finishing with an 8-9 record, missing the playoffs.
Although Gainwell and Mayfield sat out the first preseason game, they are expected to play in the upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs on August 22, as stated by head coach Todd Bowles. Gainwell is likely to showcase his capabilities with both carries and catches.
