Orland Park Approves Major Northwestern Medicine Expansion

57 minutes ago 0

The Orland Park Village Board approved a significant new development on Monday, a $275 million cancer office and parking facility as part of Northwestern Medicine’s extensive campus near Centennial Park.

Board member John Lawler expressed enthusiasm, stating, “I think it’s going to be a great amenity to the village.” He highlighted the benefit for the aging local population, emphasizing the convenience of accessing advanced treatments within Orland Park rather than traveling downtown.

Northwestern Medicine received a substantial $225 million donation from the private St. George Foundation. This donation will aid the construction of a four-story office building and a parking garage with 484 spaces. According to Northwestern, both the foundation and medical center are committed to enhancing the health of residents in the southwest region.

The planned facility will offer services like infusion stations, diagnostic imaging, and radiation treatment. However, a hospital spokesperson stated more details would emerge in the coming weeks.

Board member Koczwara mentioned that besides the new cancer center, expanded services would be available in existing spaces. He added that final state approvals were pending, anticipated in September, with construction slated to begin in the fall and conclude by 2029.

The Village Board approved certain modifications, such as reducing the building’s proximity to wetlands to 30 feet instead of 50, and increasing the maximum building height to 51.5 feet. The need for a landscape buffer along the east side was also eliminated.

Mayor Jim Dodge considered these changes “relatively minor” and saw them as incentives for development. He noted that the combination of Northwestern’s new cancer center and the University of Chicago Medical Center’s planned expansion downtown would help Orland Park sustain its reputation for top-tier medical care.
