Frank Beard, the esteemed drummer of ZZ Top, passed away at the age of 77. The band confirmed his death to CBS News, though the cause has not been provided immediately. According to the band’s publicist, Beard died in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his family. His passing occurred on Monday.
Frank Beard’s contribution to the music industry is substantial. Together with guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill, Beard founded ZZ Top in 1969. After Hill’s death in 2021, his request led to the appointment of longtime bass technician Elwood Francis as his successor.
Reflecting on the loss, Gibbons shared heartfelt words on social media. He stated, “Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top.”
Beard continued to perform actively throughout his career. One notable performance was during the $20 Best Night Ever Tour at DTE Energy Center in Clarkston, Michigan, on August 20, 2013. Images of Beard’s dynamic stage presence captured the essence of his musical prowess.
In response to Beard’s passing, ZZ Top announced the cancellation of two upcoming shows scheduled in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. However, the band plans to resume the tour this weekend at Austin City Limits, a venue significantly cherished by Beard and considered a second home.
