Chicago White Sox Pitching Updates

Chicago White Sox’s pitcher Sean Burke experienced a setback earlier in August, describing it as a ‘dead-arm’ feeling during his outing on August 16 against the Detroit Tigers. To combat this, Burke consulted with trainers and staff to make necessary adjustments. He reported feeling much better during his subsequent start against the New York Mets, expressing optimism for his upcoming game against the Texas Rangers.

The White Sox are currently battling for a division title, entering their game against the Rangers with a lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. Manager Will Venable emphasized the importance of finding strategies to win daily games, despite fluctuations in the pitching staff’s performance.

Chicago has faced challenges with their pitching rotation, ranking last in innings pitched by starters, partly due to the use of openers. This has placed extra demands on the bullpen. For instance, on Monday, starter José Urquidy allowed five runs over three innings, which resulted in heavy reliance on the bullpen. Urquidy, who struggled in recent games, has not pitched past the fourth inning in two of his last three appearances.

Similarly, Luis Castillo’s performance has been inconsistent since joining the team in a trade with the Seattle Mariners. Despite an impressive game against the Cincinnati Reds earlier, Castillo has not managed to pitch beyond five innings in recent outings.

In contrast, Anthony Kay has been effective, maintaining a strong ERA in his recent starts, striking out 17 in 23 innings. Burke, after a challenging outing against the Tigers, managed to secure positive aspects from his game against the Mets, where he pitched six innings without walks.

Urquidy and Fedde have contributed as bulk pitchers amidst Davis Martin’s absence due to injury. Despite some setbacks, they have shown promise with significant scoreless innings and key strikes in their appearances.

Additionally, relief pitcher Huáscar Brazobán was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left lat strain. As a result, Jonathan Cannon was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. With Andrew Benintendi placed on the bereavement list, the Sox called on Rikuu Nishida for support.
