Jerry Jones’ Legacy and the Future of the Dallas Cowboys

1 hour ago 0

In 1989, Jerry Jones acquired the Dallas Cowboys for $140 million. His fortune came from success in the oil industry. Today, the franchise’s value has soared to $15.5 billion, making it the world’s most valuable sports team.

Under Jones’ leadership, the Cowboys claimed three Super Bowl victories. Known as “America’s Team,” the Cowboys have become a major sports brand. As Jones approaches his 84th birthday, questions about succession naturally arise. Nonetheless, Jones addresses these inquiries without much concern.

I don’t have a succession plan, I don’t.

Jones shared this sentiment with Zak Keefer of The Athletic, suggesting that he will not actively plan for the future of the team in his absence.

Despite not planning to step away, there’s indication of future leadership. His son, Stephen Jones, seems poised to assume the mantle. Serving as the team’s co-owner, CEO, and director of player personnel, Stephen’s involvement spans numerous organizational decisions. Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman notes Stephen’s lack of ego compared to his father, considering it a strength.

Currently, Jerry remains the Cowboys’ prominent figure as the team strives to reclaim NFL glory. Their last Super Bowl win was in 1995. Recent years have seen the franchise actively revamp its roster, aiming to build a championship-worthy team. Jones expressed his aspiration in January, wishing to retire with the most Super Bowl wins as an owner.

His main rival in this pursuit, Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots, owns six Super Bowl rings. With Jones holding three, the challenge remains for him and the Cowboys to bridge this gap.
