He has negotiated favorable contracts with major automakers and has successfully organized Volkswagen workers in Tennessee. Additionally, Fain has expanded the union’s membership and political influence. This progress suggests a potential revival for the U.A.W., which had experienced diminishing impact in previous years.

Federal Investigation and Internal Conflict

Despite these achievements, Fain’s campaign faces challenges. Former allies have distanced themselves, complicating his path to another term. A federal monitor, part of a settlement from a 2021 corruption scandal, has accused Fain of misusing his power. Specifically, allegations include retaliation against board members who did not comply with his directives. These accusations have led the U.S. attorney’s office in Detroit to initiate a criminal investigation into Fain’s actions.

In response, Fain has denied any misconduct. He claims these allegations are attempts to undermine his re-election. According to Fain, the federal monitor, Neil Barofsky, is targeting him due to his political views, especially regarding the union’s support for a cease-fire in Gaza.

Public Disputes and Recorded Conversations

Issues escalated publicly over the summer. In July, Fain took a stance to defend his actions. He disclosed a recorded phone conversation from December 2023 with Barofsky. In this recording, Barofsky suggested that Fain’s announcement of U.A.W.’s support for a cease-fire drew a comparison between Israel and Nazi Germany.
