Maduro Appears in Photos from New York Jail

Ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was seen in photos shared on his social media. These images offer the first glimpse of him inside a New York prison since his capture in January by U.S. forces. After a significant military operation in Caracas, Maduro was flown to the U.S., where he has been in custody for eight months at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on drug trafficking charges.

In the photos posted to his X account, Maduro wore a gray sweatsuit with white sneakers and appeared thinner compared to previous images. He stated that he shared these pictures as a symbol of hope to his family and supporters, assuring them that they will remain strong and confident, adding, “Venezuela will be reborn.”

Maduro expressed his message as a gift to his grandchildren and supportive followers, saying, “I want you to know that we stand firm, with our hearts full of your love…” He conveyed gratitude for their continuous support and sent his love along with his wife, who also faces related charges.

The timestamp on the photographs indicates they were taken on June 25, following two significant earthquakes that claimed over 6,500 lives in northern Venezuela near Caracas, according to The Associated Press. These images emerged two days after President Donald Trump announced a diplomatic breakthrough. Venezuela agreed to allow U.S. majority control over 65 billion barrels of oil from its reserves, which could impact gas prices amidst the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Since his detention, reports suggest that Maduro spends a considerable amount of time reading the Bible. His son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, disclosed to El País in May that his father has around 8.5 hours a month to communicate with outsiders.

Maduro and his wife are set to face trial in New York in June 2027. Both have entered not guilty pleas. They could face life sentences if found guilty of conspiracy charges related to drug trafficking.
