Hasan Piker’s Campaign Involvement with Abdul El-Sayed Faces Scrutiny

Twitch streamer Hasan Piker recently revealed that Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, requested his support on the campaign trail. This request came amid significant backlash against El-Sayed for collaborating with Piker. In an interview with David Weigel, a columnist for Semafor, Piker mentioned that he had never previously considered making campaign speeches.

El-Sayed, a progressive contender in the Michigan Democratic primary, spent time with Piker during a party for content creators in support of his campaign. Piker had previously engaged in political campaigns, such as that of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, without facing much resistance. However, his involvement with El-Sayed brought criticism from numerous establishment Democrats and think tanks like Third Way.

Piker expressed surprise at the media’s reaction, noting that while public rallies seemed to draw ire, other campaign activities did not. He emphasized that he had promoted El-Sayed through various channels without issues before.

Following the backlash, El-Sayed attempted to distance himself from Piker, whose past controversial statements have raised eyebrows. Notably, he commented on America deserving 9/11 and implicated Jewish Americans regarding antisemitism.

El-Sayed addressed the controversy while speaking at the state Democratic Party Nominating Convention. He characterized Piker as a “streamer from California” and stressed the need to focus on substantive political issues instead of a “social media person in California.” He emphasized his desire not to hurt any community’s feelings.

“To anybody who feels like my comments may have been hurtful, I’m really sorry. That was not my intention,” El-Sayed said to Fox News Digital.

He had previously commented on a Michigan synagogue attack, noting “Hurt people, hurt people,” but later clarified that it was not the right time for context.
