Recently released body camera footage captures a dramatic encounter with an alleged carjacking suspect in Maryland. The video shows the suspect driving toward police officers, hitting an officer and several cars before the officers opened fire in a bid to stop her escape.
Anne Arundel County police responded on May 7 around 9 p.m. to a report of a hit-and-run incident at North Crain Highway and 11th Avenue in Glen Burnie. Upon arrival, they discovered that a woman had collided with another vehicle and then forcibly took a car belonging to a family member who came to assist her. The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Jasmin L. Cooper.
According to the footage, Cooper was located inside the stolen vehicle on the 8500 block of Severn. Officers are seen pointing their weapons at the suspect and commanding her to “turn the car off” and “get out of the car.” Although Cooper raised her hands from the steering wheel, she did not comply with requests to exit the vehicle.
An officer is heard stating, “So what, she stole her son’s car?”
As Cooper attempted to flee, she maneuvered out of the parking space, prompting officers to dodge out of her path.
Police reports indicate that Cooper drove towards the officers, hitting an officer, two patrol cars, and another vehicle. Her actions led to the officers using their firearms to stop her. Additional responding officers noted Cooper’s movement onto Reece Road, where she crashed into another car near Reece Road and Telegraph Road and attempted to break into a different occupied vehicle before she was captured.
The police footage ends with Cooper on the ground in handcuffs; officers are seen attending to her wound caused by the shooting in the parking lot. Cooper faces charges including carjacking, attempted carjacking, reckless endangerment, and first- and second-degree assault.
Both the suspect and the struck officer were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
