Jury Struggles to Reach Verdict in Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial

The jury in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy informed Judge William Sullivan on Tuesday that they could not reach a unanimous decision after four days of deliberation. In response, Judge Sullivan directed them to resume deliberations. He acknowledged the trial’s length and complexity, involving over 80 witnesses and 300 exhibits, urging the jury to continue their discussions.

Earlier on Tuesday, Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, indicated his readiness to retry the case if a hung jury occurs. “Maybe today’s the day,” Reddington remarked, emphasizing his confidence in the attentive jury. When questioned about the implications of a hung jury, he affirmed a willingness to “try it again.”

The jury, consisting of nine women and three men, began deliberations on Thursday afternoon. On Friday, they requested a review of evidence, specifically pill bottles and a knife. The jurors face the task of deciding whether to convict Clancy of first-degree murder. She stands accused of strangling her three young children with exercise bands in the basement of their Duxbury home in January 2023. Her husband discovered her outside the home after a suicide attempt left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Clancy’s defense argues she suffered from postpartum psychosis, claiming she heard voices during the incident. Her legal team states she had previously sought mental health treatment. Prosecutors countered by alleging she was not psychotic and had premeditated the murders. The jury has options ranging from first-degree murder to lesser charges like second-degree murder or manslaughter. They may also find her not guilty or not criminally responsible if they determine she was in psychosis at the time.
