House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark secured a primary victory against two progressive challengers in Massachusetts’ 5th Congressional District. The district, known for its strong Democratic leanings, saw Clark maintain her position despite a race centered around Gaza and pro-Israel political contributions.
Clark, first elected in 2013, successfully defended her office against Jonathan Paz, a former city councilor and union organizer, and Tarik Samman, a Harvard Law School researcher. Since becoming House Democratic Whip in 2022, Clark has played a pivotal role in opposing Republican initiatives on spending, immigration, and healthcare, including recent disputes over ICE funding and potential cuts to programs like Head Start and Medicaid.
The campaign finance aspect of the race was notable. Clark raised $4.5 million, far surpassing Paz, who collected $88,500, and Samman, who amassed $43,800. This financial support enabled her to outperform her opponents considerably, according to Federal Election Commission records.
Despite some critical views toward Israel, Clark was endorsed by AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. AIPAC is recognized for its pro-Israel lobbying efforts, advocating for U.S. military support to Israel. Though Clark disapproved of some of the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, such as during a district event where she used the term “genocide,” she later clarified her position.
She voted to reduce $3.3 billion in U.S. military aid, citing that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies did not align with U.S. interests. Nonetheless, Clark has continued endorsing Israel’s sovereignty and U.S. financial assistance for specific Israeli defense systems.
Despite Clark’s criticisms of Gaza policies, Paz and Samman have challenged her for not rejecting past contributions from AIPAC. Clark previously ran unopposed in 2024, easily defeating her 2022 Republican opponent, Caroline Colarusso, with 74% of the vote.
