Governor Kelly Ayotte Advances to General Election

First-term Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte won her party’s primary election on Tuesday with ease, setting up a significant general election contest against Cinde Warmington, the Democratic nominee who faced no opposition. Ayotte overpowered her Republican competition, Shaun Fife and Bob Wayne McClory, as she pursues a second two-year term governing New Hampshire.

Ayotte began Tuesday’s primary as the sitting governor after securing the position in 2024. At that time, she triumphed over former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig, ensuring the governorship remained with the Republican Party following the retirement of the four-term GOP leader, Chris Sununu.

Ayotte’s prior experience includes serving as New Hampshire’s attorney general from 2004 until 2009, transitioning to the U.S. Senate after winning the election in 2010. Her tenure in the Senate included one term, concluding with a narrow loss to Democrat Maggie Hassan in the 2016 reelection bid.

After Sununu decided against pursuing a fifth term, Ayotte seized the opportunity for political resurgence with the departing governor’s endorsement.

During her first term, Ayotte achieved legislative objectives such as revising the state’s bail reform law, asserting the previous system was overly lenient. She also enacted laws that curtailed student cellphone use in public schools and introduced penalties for drivers who reject Breathalyzer tests.

Conversely, Ayotte encountered criticism, largely from Democrats, over her influence on a state budget that reduced funding to various state agencies.

As Ayotte prepares to face Warmington, the Democratic candidate’s record includes two terms on New Hampshire’s five-member Executive Council, where she served as the sole Democrat. Her responsibilities involved collaboration with the governor on state measures and evaluation of gubernatorial appointees. Warmington’s campaign marks her second gubernatorial run, following her defeat in the 2024 Democratic primary.

Warmington has criticized Ayotte for insufficiently challenging President Donald Trump’s policies, citing objections to healthcare reductions, tariffs, and the conflict in Iran.

The Concord Monitor highlighted in June how Ayotte largely distanced herself from Trump during her initial term, noting her remark when asked about backing Trump on a potential New Hampshire visit: “I’m standing with the people of New Hampshire.”
