The Los Angeles Rams reached Australia only a day before their Week 1 international game against the San Francisco 49ers. Their arrival was just a day ahead of the kickoff.
In contrast, the 49ers landed in Melbourne a week prior, gaining time to adjust to the significant time difference. This preparation seemed to benefit them, as they appeared sharper than the Rams during Thursday night’s encounter.
The game concluded with the 49ers achieving a decisive 27-7 victory. The Rams showed underwhelming performance, especially reigning league MVP Matthew Stafford, who led the league’s top offense last year. Their play failed to match the dominance they exhibited in the previous NFL season.
There was criticism aimed at the Rams’ travel strategy, particularly from voices in the NFL community. Stephen A. Smith addressed this on ESPN’s ‘First Take’, labeling it a ‘mistake’. He remarked, ‘Arriving 28 hours before game time evidently was an error’.
In the season opener, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy delivered a solid performance. He amassed 205 passing yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He connected effectively with receivers Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, and Demarcus Robinson. Meanwhile, Stafford managed only 155 yards passing with one interception, a performance below expectations.
Looking forward, the Rams aim to recover in their upcoming Week 2 face-off against the New York Giants scheduled for next Monday.
