Federal Immigration Agent Shoots Man in Austin, Texas

On Sunday, a federal immigration agent shot and injured a man in Austin, Texas. The incident occurred near the home of Austin Councilmember Mike Siegel, who shared details and images from the scene, showing bullet holes in the passenger side of the man’s car.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson stated in a press conference that the victim is in serious but stable condition. Siegel expressed the community’s hope for a thorough investigation to determine if a crime was committed by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer involved.

The Department of Homeland Security has yet to comment on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Community members have voiced their concerns through protests at the scene, highlighting a pattern of violent encounters involving ICE agents.

Mayor Watson shared his frustration with the incident, noting that similar events have been seen in cities like Chicago and Minneapolis during large immigration enforcement operations. This reflects ongoing collaboration between the Texas Department of Public Safety and ICE under President Trump’s administration.

Congressman Greg Casar, who represents Austin, has called for an independent investigation into the shooting. Casar referenced claims against ICE, citing previous incidents where ICE’s version was contradicted by video evidence, such as the case involving Renee Good in Minneapolis. He emphasized the demand for truth and transparency.

Sunday’s shooting marks at least the second such incident this year in Texas. In July, agents in Houston shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, during an attempted traffic stop. Araujo was not the intended target. Earlier this year, Ruben Ray Martinez was killed by immigration agents in South Padre Island, Texas.
