Markwayne Mullin Criticizes Democratic Border Policies

Markwayne Mullin, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, spoke out against Democratic policies regarding border control. He commented on President Donald Trump’s approval of a $70 billion package to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) until 2029. Mullin accused Democrats of attempting to reduce funding for border security.

Mullin pointed to issues like sanctuary cities and the rising number of illegal immigrants under felony charges. He reaffirmed the Trump administration’s strict stance on individuals who shelter criminals and attack law enforcement.

Conservatives are responding to Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who proposed a bill to redirect over $100 billion previously allocated to immigration enforcement. Omar’s ‘Make ICE Pay Act’ aims to invest in communities affected by what she described as harmful operations by Homeland Security.

On Thursday, Omar announced that her legislation responds to ‘Operation Metro Surge’ in Minnesota. If passed, the bill would shift almost $140 billion from ICE and Border Patrol to local recovery initiatives across the nation. These funds would support economic relief, education, healthcare, and psychological services, administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Omar addressed the need for accountability, stating, “ICE has been tearing through our nation, devastating our neighborhoods, our cities, and our businesses.” Her plan would redirect ICE’s budget to support the communities most harmed by immigration enforcement activities.

Critics, especially from the Republican side, argue against Omar’s proposals. Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., labeled the legislation un-American, accusing it of defunding law enforcement in favor of aiding communities that harbor illegal immigrants.

Although the bill’s future appears uncertain with Republican control in Congress and the White House, the debate highlights the ideological divide over immigration policy. Lawmakers like Arkansas Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders have questioned the logic behind defunding ICE and weakening border control.

In related developments, the Department of Homeland Security’s border czar Tom Homan mentioned an investigation into Omar. The investigation details were not disclosed, but allegations have included claims of immigration and naturalization fraud. Omar has consistently denied accusations and characterized them as “bigoted lies.”
