Beach Dispute Turns Tragic

A tragic incident at a popular beach resulted from a conflict over a beach chair. An altercation between two elderly men led to one man’s tragic death in Vouliagmeni, Greece, which is just south of Athens.

According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, the incident occurred on the morning of September 20. The dispute involved an 82-year-old man trying to reserve a seat for his group. Witnesses reported the altercation to the BBC, describing it as heated and loud enough to draw attention from beachgoers.

The altercation began over a cluster of six sunbeds.

The tension escalated when the 82-year-old man suffered cardiac arrest amidst the argument. Local outlets reported he collapsed on the sand and was promptly moved to a nearby hospital, where he died shortly afterward.

A 76-year-old man involved in the confrontation was arrested and charged with causing fatal bodily harm. A 21-year-old woman who accompanied him also faced charges of verbal abuse and aiding the assault. Authorities later released the woman, who sustained a swollen and bloody face during the incident, as noted by the BBC.

Eyewitnesses stated that the younger man and his companion had selected two loungers after purchasing tickets. In contrast, the older man reportedly claimed the entire space for his friends, leading to the violent confrontation.

Onlookers described witnessing the older man being beaten, resulting in chaos on the beach. Despite efforts by a nurse present who administered CPR and used a defibrillator, the man passed away at Asklepieion Hospital in Voula around 11 a.m.

Authorities ordered a postmortem examination to identify the cause of death. Vouliagmeni Beach can see crowds of up to 8,000 visitors per day, according to Byron Smith, leading to tensions and disputes over space.

The incident also reflects broader national tensions over beach access in Greece. Earlier government actions targeted private businesses controlling public coastlines, employing drones and a citizen complaint app to manage illegal sunbed setups, as reported by the BBC.

The beach resort’s manager was questioned by police regarding the incident. Both the 76-year-old suspect and the young woman are expected to provide testimony by Wednesday, September 23.
