First Lady Melania Trump is advocating for increased integration of artificial intelligence in children’s education. On Tuesday, in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Melania highlighted her Fostering the Future Together initiative. This effort aims to collaborate with governments and tech giants to improve children’s access to technology, education, and digital skills.

“We are living in an extraordinary moment in human history,” Melania stated. “We stand together at the threshold of a technological revolution.”

However, Melania also pointed out that merely providing access to technology is insufficient. “Access alone is not empowerment,” she remarked. “We must give our children the tools and teach them how to use those tools wisely.”

This initiative aligns with President Donald Trump’s call for rapid technological development, emphasizing the need for the U.S. to maintain its competitive edge over China.

Concerns About AI in Education

Despite the push for AI, there is mounting concern from educators about overreliance on AI, potentially affecting students’ learning capabilities. Research highlights the risks of AI dependency, such as weakening memory, diminishing critical thinking, eroding confidence, and undermining mastery.

Eric Klopfer, a professor at MIT, has labeled this problem as “the illusion of learning.” An MIT committee found that reliance on AI tools like chatbots might negatively influence learning outcomes. Collaborations with Tech Giants

Google plans to invest $4 million in expanding its AI Educator Series globally. Amazon will increase free access to its Kiro AI software across numerous universities. Adobe aims to broaden access to AI-driven educational tools for students, while Intel is extending AI education programs in several countries.

In Uganda, N50 is piloting an AI education device, benefiting over 10,000 students and 200 teachers. Starlink is enhancing internet connectivity in Papua New Guinea. Zoom is providing $2.75 million in grants for education and nonprofit efforts.

Research on AI’s Impact on Learning

Concerns about AI’s role in education are echoed by recent studies. A Washington Post report, based on educator interviews and studies, suggests AI might impair students’ cognitive abilities. There are accounts of students using AI for assignments without understanding the underlying ideas. Programming students using AI faced difficulties in exams due to lack of comprehension.

Carnegie Mellon research indicates that AI-assisted problem-solving can lead to poorer performance without the technology. Another study noted weaker brain connectivity among students using AI for essay tasks compared to those working unaided.
