At 80, Smith revealed that she and her fourth husband, Dr. Brad Allen, spent 17 of their 35 married years living apart.

The couple met in 1991 when Allen performed heart surgery on Smith’s father. Two years later, Allen accepted a position at the University of Illinois in Chicago, while Smith continued living in Los Angeles. Despite the distance, their relationship endured.

Smith, who experienced three divorces, stated that motherhood transformed her view on marriage. “I had two children when I met Brad,” she explained. “Marriage was no longer an impulsive decision.” They married in Los Angeles on October 11, 1997, after seven years of commuting. Smith’s daughter was her maid of honor, and her son gave her away.

For Smith and Allen, marriage involves building a life together beyond initial attraction. Allen supported her through a breast cancer diagnosis in 2002, from which she recovered after surgery and radiation.

Smith’s past marriages taught her crucial lessons in love and values. Her first marriage to actor Roger Davis ended in divorce after infidelity. Despite challenges, Smith continued to value love and family.
