A detective in Mississippi testified that the death of Tasia Fortune, a Black woman whose body was found hanging in Jackson, was staged. The incident was linked to a drug dispute.
During a preliminary hearing, Jackson Police Detective Samuel Dukes revealed that investigators believed Fortune was killed before being hanged behind an abandoned home. This conclusion was based on findings from the state medical examiner. Two men are charged with murder, and authorities are searching for a third suspect. Fortune’s death is classified as a homicide, though the exact cause remains undisclosed.
Nationwide attention followed the case due to the scene’s historical racial implications, although officials deny it was a hate crime.
Suspects and Evidence
The hearing examined the evidence against Jarques Ratliff, 51, to decide on proceeding to a grand jury. Ratliff, arrested earlier this month, pleaded not guilty and is held without bond. Earnest Lloyd Jr., 25, was also arrested this week on murder charges.
Dukes testified that Fortune might have been killed elsewhere before being hanged at the abandoned site. Ratliff’s link to the case came from witness accounts, describing him as having been intimate with Fortune.
According to Dukes, Ratliff’s admissions during interviews showed knowledge only present at the crime scene. He did not elaborate further to maintain secrecy for the grand jury’s sake. Dukes stated that a DNA sample was obtained from Ratliff, but results are pending.
Courtroom Reactions
During the hearing, Ratliff asserted his friendship with Fortune. His stepdaughter, Lashuna Jones, supported him, believing in his innocence.
“It sounded sincere. Tasia had many friends,” commented Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey. She expressed her wish for truth and innocence to emerge if applicable, emphasizing her desire for correct prosecution.
Spivey requires more evidence before being convinced of Ratliff’s involvement: “I just hope they have the right people,” she said.
Ratliff’s attorney, Toney Baldwin, received messages from Newsweek seeking comments on the case. Baldwin emphasized the desire for truth, offering sympathies to Fortune’s family.
Community Impact
Fortune’s death alerted the Jackson community after her body was found on August 3. Testimony claims she had suffered several days before discovery.
Fortune’s family and community leaders demanded transparent answers, given Mississippi’s historical racial violence associations. Community support was emphasized through Fortune’s fundraising efforts.
Fundraising Support
A GoFundMe campaign for Fortune’s family received $181,571 from nearly 5,000 donors by Friday evening. The funds assist with burial costs, parental support, and justice efforts.
The fundraiser expressed gratitude: “From the bottom of our family’s hearts we want to thank everyone for helping our family in one of the most tragic moments of our life,” the organizers shared, vowing justice for Tasia.
