Justin Cooper Shares His Experiences with Childhood Fame

Justin Cooper was introduced to the challenging side of fame at a young age. At eight, he gained recognition for his role in the 1997 comedy film ‘Liar Liar,’ starring alongside Jim Carrey. During a guest appearance on the ‘Not So Little Rascals’ podcast, Cooper discussed the difficulties he encountered in the entertainment business.

He praised his mother’s efforts in protecting him from the public eye while he worked in Hollywood. Despite her vigilance, Cooper still faced unsettling moments related to his celebrity status. He shared an instance where his mother shielded him from receiving letters sent from people in prison who claimed to be fans.

Cooper commended his mother for ensuring his safety and noted, ‘She never, ever left me alone with anybody on set.’ He highlighted that, unlike some parents in the industry who let their children navigate the glamorous and sometimes perilous world of acting on their own, his mother was always by his side.

When speaking of his experiences, Cooper recalled working with renowned personalities like Don Rickles, known for his colorful language. His mother approached Rickles during the filming of ‘Dennis the Menace Strikes Again,’ requesting he watch his language in Cooper’s presence.

As his career progressed, Cooper appeared on shows like ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.’ However, he eventually began to feel the pressures of constant auditions. He described the routine as laborious, especially when balanced with other life aspects like schoolwork and social interests.

Cooper’s mother supported him through this transitional time, assuring him that he could leave the acting industry if he wished. Although he feared letting her down, his mother encouraged him to pursue his happiness beyond show business.

Reflecting on his relationship with his mother, Cooper mentioned that they faced challenges during his teenage years. After quitting acting, he explored other aspects of life, including experimenting with marijuana, which caused some tension between them.

Despite these issues, Cooper appreciated his mother’s unwavering support throughout his acting journey, stating, ‘Throughout my whole acting phase, she was always there … taking me on auditions, all the stuff, helping me, running lines.’
