Plaintiffs in Kansas are set to testify about the challenges caused by carrying identification not aligned with their appearance and identity.

Earlier this year, Dakota West resolved to reclaim her female driver’s license in Kansas. Previously, she had held this license for five months when she was informed by the state to surrender it.

In late February, a letter from the state indicated her driver’s license would be nullified due to new legislation. The law mandated all state-issued licenses reflect the driver’s sex at birth. The letter explicitly stated, “Your current credential will be invalid immediately.”
