James Sapp Jr.: Rising Football Star from Yorkville

2 hours ago 0

James Sapp Jr. started playing football later than he wished, but now the senior tackle for Yorkville is showing impressive skills. At 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, Sapp is a versatile player, primarily anchoring the defensive line. He noted, “I can play any position on the line, but I’m mainly at tackle because of my size.” His versatility extends to playing some defensive end, where he enjoys the one-on-one matchups.

Sapp’s family moved to Yorkville from Chicago when he was three years old. He took up football in eighth grade, after his parents became aware of the youth tackle program. Besides football, Sapp competes in basketball and track, excelling in shot put and discus and qualifying for state in the discus last spring. However, football is his main passion, ranking above track and basketball.

His dedication was evident during a game against Oswego, where Sapp recorded 13 tackles—four for loss—and a sack. This season, Sapp has accumulated 35 tackles for Yorkville, which currently stands at 3-3. Despite leading 21-20 mid-third quarter, four turnovers hurt their chances against Oswego.

Yorkville coach Dan McGuire praised Sapp, saying, “He’s extremely athletic for his size. James is a really tough block.” With a 4.8-second 40-yard dash, Sapp’s speed aids his performance, prompting McGuire to also use him at tight end, enhancing the run game. While he has yet to catch a pass, Sapp remains optimistic, “I’m gonna get there.” He credits his size and speed for his offensive potential.

Last season, Sapp totaled 48 tackles, with opportunities to surpass that as Yorkville progresses towards the playoffs. Remaining games include matchups against Plainfield East, Oswego East, and Plainfield North.

Assistant coach Todd Groth commends Sapp’s growth as a three-sport athlete, stating his hard work and attention to detail have contributed to his improvement. Groth believes some teams prepare specifically for Sapp, highlighting his power and technique.

Sapp’s dedication includes commitment to weightlifting, achieving a personal record of a 550-pound deadlift. “In high school, I really committed to it,” Sapp said. “I want to be the best player out there. The weight room accentuates what you do on the field.”

Academically accomplished, Sapp holds a 4.33 GPA with offers from NCAA Division II and III schools. His focus remains on college football, aiming to earn a scholarship and eventually reach the NFL. If not, he plans to study construction management.
