Maryland Bans Dynamic Pricing in Grocery Stores

1 hour ago 0

Maryland has taken a significant step to protect consumers by prohibiting grocery stores from using electronic pricing tools to change the cost of food items during the day. On Thursday, Maryland became the first state to impose this ban, addressing concerns that dynamic pricing could lead to unfair price manipulation.

House Speaker Del. Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk from Prince George’s County, together with Governor Wes Moore and Senate President Bill Ferguson from Baltimore City, announced the bill earlier this year. The decision comes at a time when households are grappling with rising expenses, seeking stability in their everyday purchases.

Critics have voiced worries that without regulation, retailers might exploit technology to adjust prices based on the time, leading to higher food costs during peak hours. The new law aims to maintain price consistency, ensuring consumers encounter predictable pricing when shopping for groceries.
