Unsealed Footage Reveals Details of Altoona Arrest Following CEO’s Murder

2 hours ago 0

Newly released police body camera footage provides a closer look at the arrest of Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This arrest ended a five-day manhunt after the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel in 2024. CBS News New York obtained the footage, which was first shown in public during a suppression hearing in December 2025. Mangione’s defense argued the search of his backpack violated his rights.

The incident began with a 911 call in December 2024. A tip suggested the shooting suspect was at a McDonald’s in Altoona. The footage shows officers questioning Mangione, who initially used a fake driver’s license under the name “Mark Rosario.” Later, Mangione admitted to lying about his identity. The video also depicts Mangione being transported to a police station and subjected to a strip search. Authorities found a firearm in his backpack linked to the crime scene.

A state judge later ruled that most of the evidence from the search would be admissible in court. Legal expert Richard Shorenstein noted that the officers did not appear overly concerned about safety throughout the footage. This contrasts the prosecution’s argument that searching the backpack was a necessary safety measure.

Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking that resulted in death. He also faces charges of second-degree murder, among others. A previous first-degree murder charge was dismissed in state court. Mangione awaits sentencing on federal charges in December, with the future of the state case still uncertain.
