New York City Mayor Responds to UN Criticism by Israeli Prime Minister

1 hour ago 0

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared his thoughts on being criticized by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a recent episode of podcaster Theo Von’s show. Netanyahu mentioned Mamdani in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in late September.

Von asked Mamdani if it felt unusual to be called out by name during such a high-profile event. Mamdani described the experience as ‘strange.’ At the time, he was in a meeting with the Netherlands’ Prime Minister at an LGBTQ center in Manhattan and learned of Netanyahu’s remarks afterward.

During Netanyahu’s UN speech, he accused Mamdani of spreading misinformation about Israel and made strong remarks directed at him. The Prime Minister also condemned him for allegedly distorting facts and misrepresenting the situation in Israel.

The controversy stems from Mamdani’s past comments during his mayoral campaign, where he promised to have Netanyahu arrested. Furthermore, he called on the federal government to uphold an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest related to alleged war crimes. Netanyahu and Israel dispute the allegations and challenge the ICC’s actions.

In his conversation with Von, Mamdani maintained that if he had his way, the U.S. would join the ICC and respect all its warrants. This remark highlighted Mamdani’s position on international accountability.

The discussion also touched on whether Netanyahu’s mention felt personal to Mamdani. He responded by critiquing Netanyahu, calling the Prime Minister’s comments a distraction from larger issues, including accusations of being behind acts he considers genocidal.

Additional details included Mamdani’s broader views on the situation, indicating his desire to focus on alleged wrongdoings rather than on the exchange of personal remarks.
