Tyler Vo, a junior at Andrean, appreciates the life he leads, drawing motivation from his family’s history. His family journeyed from Vietnam to the United States, seeking a better future. “I aim to excel in all I do,” Vo said. “Whether it’s as a person, teammate, or family member, I strive to honor my family’s legacy.”
Vo, standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 180 pounds, excels as a wide receiver for Andrean, a top performer in the Northwest Crossroads Conference. As of now, he has recorded 38 catches, totaling 391 yards and three touchdowns. His family’s escape from Vietnam during the war adds a personal drive to his performances on the field.
His grandfather served in South Vietnam’s army, assisting the U.S. Army. Under threat from North Vietnam, Vo’s relatives fled by sea, eventually reaching the Philippines. Without food or water for a month, they survived with the help of his grandfather, who took charge in the refugee camp before finally making it to the U.S. in 1978.
Tyler comes from a family with strong ties to their Vietnamese heritage. His parents own Aqua Spa Nails in Chesterton, and they maintain close contact with family in Vietnam. “Andrean’s strength lies in its diversity,” said coach Chris Skinner. This diversity, Skinner believes, enriches the school’s culture, and Vo embodies this spirit.
Succeeding not only in football but also in baseball, Vo earned all-state honors last year when Andrean clinched the Class 2A state title. Currently, Vo is part of a talented squad ranked No. 3 in the state. Among his teammates are standout players such as Stetson Sullivan, Gavin Helpingstine, and Mark Grubbs Jr.
“Tyler is a versatile athlete,” said quarterback Dylan Gore, speaking about Vo’s leadership and skill. Despite not being the loudest in the room, Vo sets an example through his knowledge and assistance, earning respect from his peers.
Coach Skinner, who previously coached wide receivers, recognizes Vo’s exceptional ability in route running and body control. “At the high school level, it’s not just about being fast or athletic,” Skinner noted. Vo’s understanding of routes and strategy sets him apart.
Looking ahead, Vo is considering college options, including interest from schools like Harvard and Columbia. Education remains a priority, with Vo expressing interest in majoring in pharmacy. “Going Division I with football would be incredible,” he said, acknowledging the balance between academics and athletics.
