Eva Marie Saint passed away at the age of 102. She was renowned for her performances in On the Waterfront and North by Northwest. Her career began on stage and television before she transitioned to film.
Saint was born in Albany and grew up in Delmar, New York. Known for her delicate, porcelain looks, she attended the Actors Studio in New York. During the late 1940s, she performed on Broadway and appeared on live television.
Saint’s first film role came nearly at the age of 30. Director Elia Kazan encouraged her to screen test alongside Marlon Brando. Their chemistry proved electric. In a memorable scene from On the Waterfront, Saint must keep Brando’s character from entering her home. This performance launched her film career.
In a 2000 interview with WHYY’s Fresh Air, Saint recalled how Kazan recognized the sparks between her and Brando during a screen test. Their dynamic resulted in her casting in On the Waterfront. In this film, Saint portrayed Edie, a schoolgirl entangled in union corruption, seeking justice for her murdered brother. Her role brought her an Oscar award.
Five years later, Saint transitioned to playing a femme fatale in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. Opposite Cary Grant, she showcased her versatility as an actress. Off-screen, Saint balanced her acting career with family life. After marrying director Jeffrey Hayden in 1951, she reduced her workload to focus on her children.
Saint later returned to television in the 1970s. Her talent continued to shine when she won an Emmy in 1990 for her role in the miniseries People Like Us.
