Raz Zarfati, the sister of Ron Zarfati who lost his life in the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack in Israel, attended a memorial on the third anniversary of the attack. The event took place at the Nova music festival site near Kibbutz Reim in southern Israel on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
On this day, Israelis gathered to remember the attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the capture of 251 hostages. It triggered an intense conflict in Gaza, leaving Palestinians to cope with its consequences. In southern Israel, families mourned at several locations, including intersections, bomb shelters, and the music festival site that militants overran in Israel’s most deadly attack.
This anniversary is significant as it marks the first time that all former hostages are home, marking a new stage of mourning. For Palestinians, the date underscores the ongoing impact of Israel’s retaliatory actions in Gaza. Tens of thousands have been killed, and much of the 2 million population lives in crowded, makeshift camps. Large areas lie in ruins, and over half of the territory remains occupied by the Israeli military. Despite a ceasefire almost a year ago, Israeli strikes occur frequently.
Regional Tensions and Global Implications
The anniversary highlights changes over the last three years. Israeli forces hold a significant portion of southern Lebanon due to their conflict with Hezbollah, which began attacking Israel in support of Hamas in 2023. Tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate, affecting the global economy, a situation ignited partly by the Gaza war.
Reflections of a Released Hostage
Elkana Bohbot, 37, observes the anniversary in Israel after being released from captivity last year. He spent 738 days as a hostage, enduring conditions 50 meters underground in a tunnel with minimal food and hygiene privileges. During his time in captivity, he was made to participate in several propaganda videos.
Since his release, Bohbot has undergone rehabilitation, written a book, and pursued public speaking. He celebrated holidays with his family and welcomed a new daughter, Michele, in August. Bohbot sees her birth as a message of endurance, stating, “This child is the message for you that we were here, and we will always be here forever.”
Challenges in Gaza
No memorials will occur in Gaza, where the Israeli offensive has devastated the area, displacing nearly 90% of the population. Severe restrictions on goods and aid have led to a critical hunger crisis. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 74,000 have died, with around half being women and children; the U.N. regards these figures as credible.
The ceasefire in effect from October 10 has not halted all Israeli strikes, which continue to target Hamas. Since then, 1,145 Palestinians and seven Israeli soldiers have died.
Hamas characterized the October 7 attack as retaliation against Israel’s policies, including military occupation and settlement expansion. Yet the aspiration for a Palestinian state seems more distant.
Political Tensions and Territorial Conflict
This anniversary is influenced by an upcoming election in Israel. Government memorial services were held on October 5 due to differences over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war management. This illustrates the political rifts regarding his actions during the conflict.
The attack initiated a series of events leading to regional wars. Israel engaged with Hamas and Hezbollah, backed by Iran. Territorial seizures in Syria and Lebanon displaced over 300,000 Lebanese. The U.S. partnered with Israel to strike Iran’s military, disrupting global markets. Violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank increased, with extremist settlers emboldened to target Palestinians.
