Professional wrestler KJ Orso is among the few athletes in the sport representing Native American heritage. He will display his cultural roots at Produce Wrestling’s Skoden event on Monday. Orso will team up with Gringo Loco to face off against Rich Swann and Tiny Giant. Skoden will honor Native American culture on Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
“It’s significant. In wrestling, Native American culture has not been adequately represented,” Orso shared in an interview with OutKick Dropkick. “When I removed my mask, I wanted to emphasize my heritage more. Facing Tiny Giant and Rich Swann is a big opportunity, and I’m eager to display it.”
Orso elaborated on his cultural representation in the sport. “I’m wearing my Choctaw shirt. Growing up, I participated in powwows and traveled extensively. Apart from a few like Tatanka or Chief Jay Strongbow, authentic representation has been rare. I’m proud of this moment.”
Orso disapproves of stereotypes and aims to integrate his background subtly into his attire. “I dislike stereotypes. Although I respect Tatanka for representing us, it has become a cliché in media,” he said. “We can nod to our heritage and raise awareness without conforming to stereotypes.”
His wrestling gear includes small elements, such as a dreamcatcher on his knee pad or trunks, to acknowledge his heritage. Orso emphasizes striving to be a champion, rather than an underdog, with the promise of deeper cultural storytelling when the time is right.
Orso and Gringo Loco form the tag team Dos Gringos Loco, inspired by Eddie Guerrero and Art Barr’s Los Gringos Locos. They aim to achieve tag team success in the future.
For those attending the event at the Roulette Intermedium in New York, Orso hopes they learn about Native American culture. “We are proud and resilient people, with a strong spirit and determination. The gathering of diverse tribes and cultures on this day will showcase the strength of Native people.”
