Increased Threats Against U.S. Presidency and Secret Service

1 hour ago 0

The Secret Service has seen a significant rise in threats against the presidency and its agents, with threats increasing by over 40% in the past year. Secret Service Director Sean Curran and Deputy Director Matt Quinn discussed this uptick in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes.” Curran cited the internet as a contributing factor, though the role of polarizing political figures, such as President Donald Trump, was also explored.

Curran emphasized the apolitical nature of the Secret Service, while Quinn attributed the rise in threats to mental health issues. He remarked that people are increasingly pushed to extremes. Curran noted societal changes over the years, attributing some shifts to social media’s influence.

The origins of the threats, whether from left-wing or right-wing sources, were not specified by Curran and Quinn. They referred to concerns stemming from both the January 6 Capitol riots and assassination attempts on Trump. Curran, who led Trump’s protection during an assassination attempt in 2024, underscored the importance of readiness.

The interview also touched on protective tactics like the use of decoy Air Force One planes. While emphasizing the priority of the president’s safety, Quinn explained that this mission takes precedence over the safety of agents and personnel.

Secret Service practices, including their strategy during the attempted assassination of President Trump, have faced scrutiny, especially after three officials were placed on leave. Additional concerns arise as the FBI delays releasing documents related to an assassination attempt on Trump. Judicial Watch President Thomas Fitton criticized the projected 12-year timeline for processing these documents, deeming it unacceptable.
