Dallas Cowboys Hire Mike Pettine to Bolster Defensive Coaching

2 hours ago 0

The Dallas Cowboys are working to resolve ongoing defensive issues that have persisted since 2025. In response to a recent upset home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ‘Thursday Night Football,’ the team has made a new addition to their coaching staff. Mike Pettine, a seasoned NFL coach, joins the Cowboys as a senior defensive assistant. He will work alongside defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who has experienced challenges during his first year in the role.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer discussed the decision to bring Pettine on board. ‘It’s something we’ve been talking about for a long time. We convinced Pett it made sense for him,’ Schottenheimer told reporters. Pettine comes with significant experience, having served as an assistant head coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2022 to the previous season and as a senior defensive assistant with the Chicago Bears in 2021.

Pettine and Parker have a history together, with Parker’s first NFL role in 2019 as a quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers, where Pettine was the defensive coordinator. Parker’s appointment as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator marked the youngest such hire in the team’s history, and he sought to include someone he trusted in his staff.

Following a stinging loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels led Tampa Bay to victory, Pettine has come out of retirement. The Cowboys, now 2-3 for the season, have struggled defensively, allowing 395.4 yards per game—the second-highest in the NFL—and ranking low in both rushing defense and points allowed per game.

Despite these challenges, the team’s offensive efforts, led by Dak Prescott, have been positive, ranking seventh in points per game with 27.6. Pettine’s addition aims to assist in improving defensive outcomes alongside Parker, whose communication and strategy are considered strong. Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of trust between the coordinator and assistant for effective collaboration.

The Cowboys’ upcoming game is a highly anticipated match against the Green Bay Packers, Pettine and Parker’s former team, set for ‘Sunday Night Football’ in Week 6.
