In Provo, Utah, Bear Bachmeier’s late-game heroics led No. 8 BYU to a 28-24 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame. The Cougars’ win was a key part of an eventful day in college football where five of the top eight teams were defeated, according to Sportradar.
The game marked the first time the top two ranked teams lost on a regular-season day since November 17, 2012, with No. 1 Georgia also falling to Auburn. Bachmeier contributed significantly to BYU’s efforts, throwing for 224 yards, running for two touchdowns, and even catching another.
Preston Rex supported the offensive efforts with 66 yards on 10 carries, helping BYU achieve a 6-0 start for the third consecutive year. The crowd responded by rushing the field to celebrate the monumental victory.
The climactic moment came when Bachmeier completed a touchdown pass to Walker Lyons with under two minutes remaining. Despite CJ Carr’s valiant efforts, taking Notre Dame to the BYU 9-yard line in the last moments, the Irish’s final pass attempt ended incomplete.
Earlier, Notre Dame had managed to reduce an 11-point BYU lead with strategic field goals. Jonaz Walton’s 3-yard touchdown run gave Notre Dame a temporary lead of 24-21.
Bachmeier’s efforts were initially thwarted by a Jayden Sanders interception, but BYU’s defense managed to force Notre Dame off the field. Bachmeier capitalized on this opportunity, leading a decisive 55-yard drive and connecting with Lyons for the winning score.
CJ Carr ended the day with 261 passing yards. Nolan James Jr. contributed 77 rushing yards and a touchdown, but their efforts were not enough to maintain Notre Dame’s 16-game winning streak.
Bachmeier’s early-game strategy involved mixing efficient passes with aggressive runs, overwhelming Notre Dame’s defense from the start. He achieved a 72% completion rate in the first half.
BYU’s initial touchdown came through Bachmeier’s 5-yard run. Notre Dame responded with an 8-yard touchdown run by Nolan James, briefly taking a 10-7 lead.
Bachmeier then regained the lead for the Cougars with a 15-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 1-yard dive, giving BYU a 21-10 edge at halftime. A fumble by CJ Carr deep in BYU territory thwarted a potential Irish score before the break.
Notre Dame: The Irish faced challenges in the red zone, including an unexpected turnover and settling for field goals.
- BYU: A critical penalty nullified a would-be 39-yard touchdown. Following this, special teams mistakes briefly gave Notre Dame an opportunity to come back.
Looking ahead, Notre Dame will face Navy on October 31, while BYU is set to compete against UCF on October 24.
