President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski as the Alaska Senate race heats up. He labeled Murkowski as one of the worst members of the Senate and slammed the state’s election system.
Using Truth Social, Trump attacked Murkowski and referred to ranked-choice voting as a “TOTAL DEMOCRAT SCAM meant to confuse the Voter.” He claimed Murkowski opposed a Justice Department lawsuit because she wanted Democrats to win.
Trump described Murkowski as the “Republicans’ Worst Senator” and “DISGRACE to Alaska and our Country.” He claimed she had previously benefited from the voting system, stating she unexpectedly won an election she was not leading in.
Trump supports Republican Senator Dan Sullivan’s reelection campaign against Democrat Mary Peltola. He also accused Democrats of attempting to divert votes to Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired teacher running as a Republican, to steal the seat from the incumbent.
Trump encouraged Alaskans to vote “YES” on Ballot Measure 2 to repeal ranked-choice voting, asserting his administration provided significant benefits to the state. The issue has gained national attention.
Ranked-Choice Voting Explained
Ranked-choice voting (RCV) allows voters to rank candidates from first to last choice. This differs from traditional voting where only one candidate is marked.
If no candidate receives over 50% of the vote, the lowest-ranked candidate is eliminated. The second choices on those ballots are then counted, and the process continues until one candidate surpasses the majority threshold.
Justice Department Lawsuit
The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit to stop the certification of Alaska’s Senate election results if incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan does not win.
The lawsuit questions the presence of two Republican candidates with similar names on the ballot. It argues that votes for the retired teacher could affect the outcome under the ranked-choice system.
Trump confirmed he directed the DOJ to pursue this case. Critics have raised concerns about the difficulty of determining voters’ intentions due to the secret ballot system.
Senator Murkowski responded that Alaskans do not need help voting and that Alaska has already addressed the issue by clearly differentiating the candidates. She criticized the lawsuit filed by the DOJ.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the litigation aims to preserve ballots and ensure voters are not confused. He emphasized that the lawsuit is based on federal law and is not coordinated with any campaign.
Polls Indicate Close Race
Recent polls show a competitive race between Sullivan and Peltola. An InsiderAdvantage poll gives Peltola a slight lead over Sullivan.
Data for Progress polling indicates Peltola leading in a simulated final round of ranked-choice voting. Sullivan’s net favorability has decreased, with more voters viewing him unfavorably.
This Senate race remains crucial as it might influence control of the Senate.
