England’s soccer star Harry Kane achieved a significant milestone, winning the trophy for striker of the year at the Ballon d’Or ceremony held at the London Palladium Theatre. This marks the first time in 25 years an Englishman has claimed the award, following Michael Owen’s win in 2001.
Kane’s remarkable performance last season saw him score 73 goals for club and country. He was not only Europe’s top scorer but also broke scoring records in Germany with Bayern Munich and at the World Cup. Under his captaincy, England secured a third-place finish in the tournament, their best in 60 years.
The 33-year-old expressed how winning the prestigious award represented years of resilience, hard work, and overcoming challenges. “My journey wasn’t straightforward. I wasn’t the kid who went straight to the top,” Kane shared, addressing young players and encouraging them to persist through struggles and setbacks.
Kane was followed by Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, who was recognized as best young talent for a third consecutive year. Past Ballon d’Or winners Rodri and Lionel Messi were also high in the voting.
Grateful to his support system, Kane thanked his teammates, coaches, and family, including his wife Kate, whom he described as his greatest supporter. Kane’s outstanding performance led Bayern Munich to win both the Bundesliga and the German Cup, and they reached the Champions League semifinals. His six goals in the World Cup propelled him to become England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer.
England manager Thomas Tuchel praised Kane’s leadership qualities and contributions to the team, calling him an invaluable asset to the Three Lions.
The ceremony attracted throngs of fans in London, with many cheering for Kane as he signed autographs and interacted with them. Despite the celebrations, Kane maintained his professional focus, noting his upcoming cup game and an early flight back to Munich for team training.
Alongside Kane’s triumph, Spain’s Alexia Putellas made history, winning her third women’s Ballon d’Or. Having recently moved to the London City Lionesses, Putellas led her former club Barcelona to multiple victories, including the Women’s Champions League, and helped Spain win the Women’s Nations League last year.
Putellas encouraged young athletes to embrace the sport with love and passion, sharing insights from her long career at Barcelona, where she experienced a ‘perfect story’ before joining her new club.
The 2026 ceremony was notably held in London to honor Stanley Matthews, the inaugural Ballon d’Or winner 70 years ago.
