A remarkable journey to view the northern lights was the realization of a lifelong dream for one man, who embarked on an extensive road trip across continents. Malik Al-Sultan, a 28-year-old freelance digital creator from Saudi Arabia, undertook an arduous 5,600-mile journey from his home country to northern Norway to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis. His ambitious adventure, which required meticulous planning over the span of a year, was reported by the news agency SWNS.
Choosing to forego air travel, Malik opted for a road trip, allowing him to experience different countries along his route. On December 20, 2025, he commenced his journey in a Toyota Land Cruiser pickup truck, setting out on an adventure that spanned 19 countries over three weeks. His destination was Bodø, Norway, where anticipation met reality as he finally witnessed the mesmerizing northern lights.
Malik’s preparation for this journey was both exhaustive and meticulous. In the five weeks leading up to his departure, he dedicated substantial time ensuring his vehicle’s readiness for the long road ahead and procuring necessary travel documentation, such as a Schengen visa for traveling across many European countries.
The journey was vast and diverse, taking him through places like Kuwait, Turkey, and Germany, culminating in a spontaneous detour to the UK.
The financial commitment for this journey was substantial, with the total cost amounting to approximately $12,300. This covered essentials such as fuel, food, and accommodations on the road. Despite the initial plans, Malik found himself in London, captivated by its allure. The unexpected stay there was a rewarding experience, where he appreciated the city’s charm and vitality for a few days.
The culmination of his voyage at Bodø, where he observed the auroras illuminating the night sky, was the fulfillment of his dream. “It was quite a long journey, traveling through so many different cultures and lands,” Malik shared, adding that the experiences along the way were as significant as the destination itself.
After basking in the splendor of the northern lights, Malik plans to embark on a return trip to Saudi Arabia, possibly exploring a new route back. His incredible adventure not only achieved a personal dream but also became a testament to the meaningful encounters and cultural riches experienced during the journey.
In another notable journey reported recently, Bob Walker took a one-day, 14,000-mile trip from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Arbroath, Scotland, to say goodbye to his long-time friend, Peter Gould. This heartfelt mission underscores the extraordinary lengths people will go for friendship and fulfilling life’s significant farewells.
