Lindsey Vonn Undergoes Surgery After Olympic Crash

Lindsey Vonn, a renowned Olympic skier, recently underwent surgery to address a fracture in her left leg. This followed a dramatic crash during the alpine skiing women’s downhill event at the Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

Despite an already challenging situation with a ruptured ACL, Vonn attempted to compete in hopes of medaling. Unfortunately, she lost control just seconds into her run, crashing early in the race. Medical personnel quickly arrived to assist her as she lay on the snowy terrain.

A video provided by Olympic Broadcasting Services captured Vonn’s fall. She was soon airlifted from the mountain to a nearby clinic in Cortina. Subsequently, she was transferred to Ca’Foncello Hospital in Treviso. The hospital reported that Vonn was being supported by a comprehensive team of specialists.

The U.S. Ski Team confirmed her condition as stable, receiving care from both American and Italian doctors. Anouk Patty, U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s chief of sport, noted, “She’ll be OK, but it’s going to be a bit of a process.” Patty stressed the inherent risks athletes take in the sport, remarking on the incredible speeds and dangers involved.

In the same event, Breezy Johnson earned the gold medal, securing the first for Team USA at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games. Reflecting on Vonn’s accident, Johnson expressed empathy, recalling her own experience with a knee injury that kept her from competing in the 2022 Games. “I know what it is to be here, to be fighting for the Olympics,” she said, acknowledging the emotional toll such injuries can inflict.

Johan Eliasch, president of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, described Vonn’s crash as “tragic,” but acknowledged it as part of the reality of ski racing. He praised Vonn for her impact on the sport, noting that her race garnered significant attention and highlighted the sport positively during the games.
