At Ford Field on Sunday, a serious incident unfolded as linebacker Jack Campbell was left motionless after a violent tackle. Campbell was removed from the field using an immobilized cart.
Upon realizing Campbell’s distress, trainers and doctors immediately rushed onto the field. Players from both teams kneeled, observed, and appeared to pray as Campbell received medical attention.
Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson showed visible emotion, almost to the point of tears, during the incident.
The collision involved Campbell and Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson, who was sandwiched by two Lions defenders. Campbell’s approach to the contact seemed precarious; he was falling to his knees, which caused his face mask to make contact rather than his shoulders or arms. This contact led to Campbell’s head and neck compressing into his torso.
Campbell collapsed and remained immobile on the field. Medical personnel needed several minutes to prepare him for transport.
The Lions later announced Campbell was taken to a local hospital for evaluation of a neck injury. Coach Dan Campbell expressed the team’s support, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jack and his family. He’s being taken care of. We don’t have any new information. We’ll keep you updated as this goes, but we’re thinking about him.”
