Sheriff Acknowledges Missteps in Investigation of Missing 84-Year-Old Nancy Guthrie

1 month ago 0

The investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has encountered some challenges, as acknowledged by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. Early on, the case was mishandled, with the crime scene tape being removed too soon and delays occurring in reaching out for assistance from other law enforcement agencies.

According to The Arizona Republic, Sheriff Nanos confirmed that Guthrie’s home in Tucson, Arizona, was released from being a designated crime scene prematurely. Officers had to later return to gather more evidence. With hindsight, it was evident that keeping the crime scene secured longer would have been more effective, and calling in other agencies earlier might have benefited the investigation.

Additionally, a high-tech search aircraft pilot faced disciplinary action following a disagreement with Sheriff Nanos. This incident reportedly led to the aircraft being delayed by several hours after Guthrie was reported missing. “Three hours in a search for a vulnerable adult is an eternity,” a law enforcement source explained.

The timeline shared by investigators reveals that Guthrie, who is the mother of NBC’s “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, was thought to have been forcibly taken. However, no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation, now involving the FBI, continues to explore all potential leads.

Another aspect complicating the investigation was the staffing decisions criticized by the Pima County Deputies Organization. They highlighted that the reassignment of the pilot, among other staffing changes, left essential units understaffed during the high-profile search. The group described these decisions as part of a pattern of questionable leadership choices.

The timeline of events tracked Guthrie’s last known movements. She was dropped off at her home after dining with family on the evening of January 31, 2026. Later that night, her home’s security systems experienced disruptions, and blood belonging to Guthrie was discovered on the porch, amplifying concerns about her safety.

The investigation, bolstered by the FBI, also involves reviewing ransom notes and has led to the arrest of one individual for an imposter ransom demand. The Public is urged to help by sharing information, with a $50,000 reward offered for leads aiding in Guthrie’s recovery.

Camron Guthrie, Nancy’s son, made a heartfelt plea through a video, urging those who might have his mother to contact the family directly. Despite the resources from multiple agencies now dedicated to this possible kidnapping case, the main goal remains to locate Nancy Guthrie safely.

The investigation remains active, with authorities cautious about disclosing further details at this stage.
