Hakeem Jeffries’ Potential Path to House Speakership

60 minutes ago 0

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., is positioned to make history as the first Black individual elected as Speaker of the House. Elected as the House minority leader in 2022, Jeffries stands as the first Black politician to lead either party in the House or Senate. If elected Speaker, he would be second in line for presidential succession, following the vice president.

Jeffries’ journey to this potential role marks the zenith of his nearly 14-year tenure in the House. From a member deeply engaged in criminal justice policy, he ascended to a prominent party leader under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and subsequently as minority leader. His trajectory has involved uniting a diverse and often fractious House Democratic caucus, a challenge he continues to face as the party seeks to fulfill its promises to voters.

This is a change election, and we understand as House Democrats that we need to deliver dramatic change,” Jeffries stated. “Things are broken. We need a Congress that puts the American people first.

Criminal Justice and Political Beginnings

Brooklyn-born and raised, Jeffries has represented parts of the borough in Congress since 2013. Prior to his political career, he practiced law and attributed his time in a law school legal clinic as the catalyst for his focus on criminal justice reform.

During his six years in the New York State Assembly, Jeffries was instrumental in regulating warrantless stop-and-frisk practices by the NYPD. In Washington, he championed the bipartisan First Step Act during the Trump administration. This act, which reduced sentences for certain drug offenses, required cooperation with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. Jeffries expressed that achieving results in Washington depends on forming coalitions, even with unlikely allies.

This cooperation brought criticism from some within his party. Jeffries clarified that his meeting with Kushner was to discuss affordability and stressed that Democrats are committed to holding the administration accountable.

Political Stance and Challenges

Jeffries, previously associated with the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a supporter of Medicare for All, faces skepticism from the party’s left wing. As Speaker, balancing or sidelining the influence of Democratic Socialists of America-aligned members presents a potential challenge.

There will never be a moment where I bend the knee to hard-left democratic socialism,” Jeffries told The Atlantic in 2021.

He emphasizes that his experience as a Black man informs his perception of America’s systemic inequities, contrasting with the class-focused views of far-left progressives.

Jeffries also played a key role during Trump’s Senate trial regarding the Ukraine pressure campaign, where Trump sought investigations into Joe Biden while withholding military aid. Despite this, Jeffries and other Democrats have not prioritized impeachment in Trump’s second term, focusing instead on lowering costs for Americans.

The decision for the House Speaker will be made when Congress convenes on January 3.
